Skopje, Macedonia
Over the weekend it became very difficult to work with the Serb police becoming very hostile. I ran out of money and film. The OSCE pulled out. So despite imminent air strikes, I decided to take a breather and run down here to Skopje for a few days, a mere ten miles from the Kosovo border. Now that the talks have failed, I feel like shit for leaving all of my colleagues in Pristina. I’m getting cash, film, car, and hoping to get back in. So I’m safe and sound while the rest of the pack collects in the Hotel Grand.
Skopje feels a bit like Casablanca in the movie, all these evacuated OSCE people and orange cars here, their Albanian interpreters getting calls every hour on their mobile phones from their friends and family in Pristina about the latest news. I’m spending my time with Lydra, one the OSCE translators, and she heard today that a girl she went to high school with was killed in one of yesterday’s cafe bombs. A heavy air hangs over all the Kosovo people here.
